What life is like in each
Marbella is the centre of life on this part of the coast. Marbella town has a whitewashed old quarter around the Plaza de los Naranjos, a seafront promenade and shops, schools and services that keep it busy all year, so you can live there without a car. A few minutes west are the Golden Mile, Puerto Banús and the golf valley of Nueva Andalucía. Málaga airport is about 40 minutes from Marbella town.
Estepona has kept the feel of an Andalusian town: an old quarter of flower-lined streets, a daily market, tapas bars in the squares, a marina with a Sunday market and a coastal path that runs along most of the municipality. It is quieter than Marbella and feels more Spanish, which is exactly why many buyers choose it. Marbella centre is about 25 minutes away by car and Málaga airport about 55.
Which one suits you?
- Marbella if you want the best-known addresses, the widest choice of homes and the shortest drive to the airport, or to be minutes from Puerto Banús and the Golden Mile.
- Estepona if space matters more than the address: the same budget buys about 30% more square metres, and the bigger the home you need, the more you save.
- Both, at the border: San Pedro de Alcántara (Marbella) and the New Golden Mile (Estepona) meet halfway, at €5,256 and €6,437 per m².
