Benahavís is a small mountain village a few kilometres inland from the coast, surrounded by some of the most exclusive residential estates in southern Spain. People come for the views, the privacy and the food.
The lifestyle
The village itself is known across the coast for its restaurants, packed into a handful of narrow streets. Around it, the landscape is green and hilly, with golf courses, walking routes along the Guadalmina river and views that run from the mountains down to the sea and, on clear days, to Africa.
What you can buy
Most of the property sits in gated communities on the hillsides. La Zagaleta and El Madroñal are the best known, with large villas on generous plots and round-the-clock security. La Quinta, Los Arqueros, Monte Halcones and La Alquería offer apartments, townhouses and villas beside the golf courses, many of them recently built.
Who it suits
Buyers who put privacy and views ahead of being able to walk to the beach. You will need a car, but in return you get space, security and quiet a short drive from San Pedro, Puerto Banús and Marbella. International schools are within easy reach, which makes it popular with families living here all year.
