Sotogrande is a private residential estate on the coast of Cádiz, west of Estepona and Manilva. Planned from the 1960s around golf, polo and a marina, it is a world of its own: large plots, very low density and a calm, discreet atmosphere.
Sport sets the rhythm. The estate is home to Valderrama, one of the best-known golf courses in Europe, as well as Real Club de Golf Sotogrande and La Reserva, and its summer polo season draws an international crowd. The marina has restaurants and shops along the water, and with an international school inside the estate many families live here all year.
Sotogrande Alto, on the hills, is the area of large villas on generous plots, many with views of the sea and Gibraltar. Sotogrande Costa, closer to the beach, mixes villas and apartments, and the marina offers apartments and penthouses on the water. Plots are among the largest on this part of the coast, which is why the typical home here is much bigger than in Marbella.
Buyers looking for space, privacy and a sporting life, families who want an international school close to home, and anyone happy to be a little further from the bustle of Marbella. Gibraltar airport is close for flights to the UK.
No. Sotogrande belongs to San Roque, in the province of Cádiz, about 40 minutes west of Marbella by car.
Gibraltar airport is about 25 minutes away; Málaga airport is about an hour and a quarter.
The estate was planned with very large plots and low density, so villas and gardens are bigger than on most of the Costa del Sol. The figures above show the typical size and price of the homes listed for sale.
